Alagappa University was established in the year 1985 with four departments. Tamil Department was the first among the four. This department offered degrees like Post Graduate(M.A.,) Master of Philoshophy (M.Phil.,), Doctrate (Ph.D) and Post Doctorate (PDF) are offered as full time courses. Post Graduate course in Temple Arts is also offered. Also Summer Sequential Programme in M.Phil Tamil is functioning successfully.
Professor Dr. K. Sivagurunathan was the first Head of the Department of Tamil. Prof. Dr. A. Viswanathan, Dr. Prof. T. Chockalingam, Prof. Dr. R. Subramanian worked as Heads of the Department as the Department is Headed by Prof.Dr.M.Pandi, followed Prof.D.S.Rajaram, Mr.M.Natesan, and Asst. professors Dr.M.Sutha and Dr.S.Suresh .
Prof. Dr. V. S. Alagappan, Prof. RM. Ramanathan, Prof. R. Pichaikannu, Prof. Dr. R. Damodaran, Prof. Dr. S. Senthamizh Pavai, Dr. K. Kananathan worked and brought occopades to the Department.
In this Tamil Department office A. Seetha Devi is working as Junior Assistant and Mr.N. Alagappan is working as Officer Assistant.
Faculties published Articlesand 12 books. The Department scholars published articles. A few text books are in the 335 syllabus of many universities and colleges.
Post-Graduate Students will submit dissertations about temple or Churches or Mosque and their theses are kept in the department library more than 500 temples, churches and mosques were filed around Karaikudi in of Sivaganga, Ramnad and Pudukottai Districts.
The Tamil Department gives preference to the literature of Sangam Age, Grammar, Journalism, Nattupurayial and to others aspects of sangam Literature. Many researchres in M.Phil & Ph.D. courses are Singapore & Malaysia. Many Ph.D Scholars are doing their research as part time scholars with much centhusiasm in Tamil.
This department students are eligible to appear for exams like NET,SET,TET and TRB. Classes are also conducted for the competitive examinations like TNPSC,UPSC,SSC,Railway and Bank also the department can 14 endowments
Through this endowment they conduct Scholars, Writers and Professors are inited to deliver Endowment Lectures.
Workshops and seminars are conducted by setting fund from the sponsoring fund Institution.
Scholars who did research are sponserd from the UGC ,CICT , CIIL and Dr.R.Muthu Ganesanar Research chair and also from URF.
Central Institute of Indian Language (CIIL) in Mysore in conducting language training to the Sivaganga, Ramnad and Viruthunagar District, teachers. The University entered into Memorandum of Understanding through RFU and NTS and CHL.
Teachers of Tamil Department are deliver lecture in the academic staff college for Teacher.
The university of International net work of Tamilnadu had started to computer Tamil Association Tamil computing and educating the importance Tamil through internet. In each University an affiliated colleges are given training through this association.
The participation of Tamil department in the Tamilian Civilisation, tradition and the growth of arts and culture is excellently appreciated.
