Department of Industrial Chemistry

Objectives
  • To conceive and conduct programmes in Industrial Chemistry at Post-graduate and M.Phil. levels to train manpower for the Academic and Research institutions and Chemical Industries.
  • To carry out Basic, Applied and Advanced Research in various fields of Chemistry.
  • To associate with institutions and industries in a meaningful way to transfer technology and
  • To render consultancy and testing services to the industries.
Vision and Mission
  • To conduct world-class Master and Research programmes in Industrial Chemistry and
  • To carry out Advanced Research in different areas of Chemistry.

The Department of Industrial Chemistry, one of the prime Departments of the University, was established in 1985. It offers M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Chemistry, and M. Phil. Chemistry (Week-End) programme. Many advanced instruments such as, HR SEM, UV-VIS, FT IR, AAS, Elemental analyser, TG/DTA, DSC, Impedance analyser, Electrochemical workstations, Computer colour matching and Ozonator were purchased from various funds from UGC and DST and housed in the department. Internet and Wi-Fi facilities are available in the entire Department.

It has generated over Rs. 11 Crore of funds from UGC, DST, AICTE, DRDO, and CSIR to carry out research projects in many advanced research areas. Consultancy services are provided by the department to various organisations and industries, such as Dredging Corporation, DRDL, BHEL, Tamil Nadu Road Sector project and Tamil Nadu Chemicals Products Ltd. The Department has taken 21 Indian and International patents.

It is to be recorded that the Department of Industrial Chemistry has been recognized by UGC-SAP (DRS), DST-FIST and DST-PURSE to carry out advanced research in the fields of Green Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Textile Chemistry, Nanomaterials, Sensors, Biosensors and Solar Cells. Active research activities are under progress in these areas. The Department has produced 162 Ph.Ds. in the last five years. Currently 40 scholars are pursuing their Ph.D. research. The members of our Faculty have published over 1045 research papers in the reputed International and National refereed SCI journals, and presented 1500 research papers in Conferences.

So far, the Department has organized 24 International/ National Conferences/Workshops, and conducted one UGC Refresher Course. Its faculty members have received invitations to visit and collaborate with many reputed international institutions and also received many awards at national and international levels. Various expansion activities are in the pipeline towards strengthening, library, laboratory, computing facility, classroom modernization, and infrastructure. We are privileged to form part of Alagappa University, a prestigious University in India and we maintain good collaborations with the national and international scientific community and carry out advanced research. Thanks to these administrators, researchers and collaborative partners. We offer exceptional prospects to all who are in need and collaborate with us.
