Chancellor

His Excellency, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Thiru Surjit Singh Barnala was born on 21st October, 1925 at Ateli, Begpur in Mohindergarh District, Haranya State where his father was a Magistrate. He proceeded to Lucknow for higher studies and graduated in Law from Lucknow University in 1946 and practiced Law at Barnala Constitutency in 1967. He held the profuse affection of those peolple that he represented the Constitutency till 1999.
His public life spanning over 60 years is full of achivements which are inspirational, particularly for the younger generation. He is one of the most distinguished and ablest leaders of the nation with profuse administrative acumen.
In 1969, he became Education Minister of Punjab. During his tenure, he was instrumental in founding the Guru Nanak dev University in Amristsar. In 1977, he was elected as a Member of Parliament and was inducted as Union Cabinet Minister holding the portfolios of Agriculture, Food, Irrigation and Rural Development.
With a landslide victory in Assembly Elections he became the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1985. As Cheif Minister, he was tough on terrorism and dear to hearts of many, including opposition leaders. He was elected to the Loksabha for the second time in 1996 and again in 1998 and held the position of Cabinet Minister looking after the Chemical & Fertilizer and Food & Civil Supplies.
His Excellency has served as a Governor of several States of the nation. He assumed the officer of Governor of Tamil Nadu earlier in 1990 and served for about a year. Later, he became the Governor of Uttranchal State and Andhra Pradesh before assuming office as a Governor of Tamilnadu on 3rd Nov 2004 for the second time.
His Excellency has also represented India in the United Nations, FAO, SAARC and other International Organizations. As a patriot, his fervour for achieving freedom for Bharat Mata was so great that he had participated in Quit India Movement in 1942 and was arrested.
His Excellencey has a great passion for fine arts as well. He had done scores of paintings and an exhibitions of his paintings was held in 1998 in the Art Gallery of Patiala University and in 2004 at Hyderabad State Art Gallery, at Lalit Kala Akademy, Chennai on Octobet 12th 2005 and at Aurodan Art Galleries, Pondicherry on 30th Oct 2005.
He has also authored a book titled “Story of an Escape”, which was first published by Penguin Publishers and its second edition was published as “Quest for Freedom – Story of an Escape” in Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Urdu and also in Brail.
Alagappa University is greatly benefited by adept guidance of his Excellency, the Governor of Tamilnadu.

|
Our Pro-Chancellor, the Honorable Minister for Higher Education Dr.K.Ponmudy has been an immense source of strength and support to the youth of the State and our University. A graduate of Law, the Honorable Minister for Higher Education holds 3 Post Graduate Degrees in the Social Science area, besides a Doctorate. He has authored a book on “The Dravidian Movement and the Black Movement”.
Under the able leadership of the most Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanithi, our Hon’ble Higher Education Minister is bringing about a metamorphosis in the complexion and content of Higher Education in the State of Tamil Nadu. His sole soal is “Increase the Quantity, Improve the Quality” of Higher Education opportunities. Enabling more students from poor families and rural areas to get access to ‘MAESTRO’ (Medicine, Arts, Engineering, Science, Technology, Research and Open) education at a low cost is his thrust goal. Towards achieving that goal, the Hon’ble Higher Education Minister of Tamil Nadu has put in place a spectrum of measures such as:
Waiver of payment of tuition fee for UG courses in Government and Government aided colleges,
Free education up to Post Graduation for economically poor women students, “Double shift system” in all Government Arts and Science colleges to in-take more students,
Establishment of Technology Universities in Trichy, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli and scores of Engineering and Medical colleges in the new and backward districts of the State,
Imparting Induction training on teaching methods to newly recruited teachers,
Quality Accreditation of Colleges/Universities by the National Assesment and Accreditaion Council(NAAC),
Promotion of Community Colleges to enable those were unable tp complete their education due to poverty and other reasons to re-enter studies in order to open a fresh vistas of opportunity for them,
Introduction of uniform syllabi and academic calendar across all institutions ans Universities in Tamil Nadu,
Enhancing the employability of students pursuing courses in Arts and Science colleges by enabling them to do a ‘Job oriented Add-on Certificate Courses’ in Polytechnic Colleges/ITIs
Implementation of Choice Based Credit System in Arts and Science Colleges,
- Initiating measures for improvement of skills like Spoken English, Yoga, Soft Skills, and General Knowledge for competitive exams,
Modernizing and enhancing basic Infrastructure like Additional classrooms, state of the art Lab facilities, Hygienic facilities etc., and
Seeking expert opinions on the measures for overhauling the present system of evaluation, teaching and learning in the State by constituting a Committee of Experts headed by Dr.S.P.Thiysgarajan, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras.
These measures have resulted in remarkable Quantity and Quality enhancements in the tapestry of higher education in Tamil Nadu and the State has become numero uno that is “Number One” State in the country in the sphere of higher education.

New Departments and Courses
|
Six new departments viz. Nano Technology, Bioelectronics and Biosensors, Bioinformatics, Animal Health and Management and Department of Life Long Learning have been created in the Alagappa University; three new centres viz. Centre for Marine Microbial Technology, Centre for Marine Pharmacology and Centre for Marine Geology have been established. Many new innovative programs of learning have been introduced. Five-year Integrated MBA, MBA-e-Learning, M.Sc. Marine Biology, M.Sc. Marine Microbial Technology, M.Sc. Marine Pharmacology, M.Sc. Marine Geology, Diploma in Teacher Education, M.Com. Introduction of School concept
|
School Concept has been introduced in the University and 15 schools have been created.

Revamping of the University Administration
|
To put strict vigil over the creeping of unwanted miscreants in the University Campus, CCTV cameras were fitted in all important junctions of the Campus to help facilitate to keep the assets of the University safely and if any untoward incident happens. This has brought immense benefit of improving the efficiency and work culture among the staff of the University.

Introduction of CBCS
|
The University has introduced choice based credit system for all PG and M.Phil courses offered by the University departments and its affiliated colleges.

Evening Colleges
|
Evening Colleges were started at Ramanathapuram and Rameswaram for the benefit of the poor and needy students of this backward region to pursue their higher education, besides the existing Colleges at Thondi and Paramakudi. It has been proposed to start evening college at Tiruppuvanam and Singampunari.

Dr. A. Shenbagavalli presently Professor and Head, Department of Physical Education and Health Sciences assumed the office of Registrar on 29th April 2009.
Dr. A. Shenbagavalli entered the field of Physical Education as Lecturer in the year 1974 in the Institution in which she had her graduation and post graduation in the field on Physical Education (i.e.) Alagappa College of Physical Education, Karaikudi then affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. She dedicated her career to the betterment and upliftment of the students who came from many walks of life and hailed from various social backgrounds. During these times, the Alagappa University came into being in the year 1985. As a consequence the College was absorbed by the University and renamed as Alagappa University College of Physical Education. After having served for nearly 29 years in the same institution in various grades, she was elevated to the post of Principal of the same institution in which she studied and served.
After having served for nearly four years as Principal (2003-2007) and Warden of various Hostels both for Women and Men, she was appointed as Professor in the Department of Physical Education and Health Sciences in the year 2008 and then become ex-officio Head of the Department and Chairperson, School of Physical Education. She is continuing as such till date.
During her tenure as educator in the field of Physical Education, she had acted as Member for Board of Studies in various Universities in the field of Physical Education and further served Member on Standing Committee on Academic Affairs and Senate of Alagappa University. She had organized 15 National Seminars, 3 International Conferences, and presented 40 papers in the National and International Seminars and Conferences. She has published 3 Books and presented 15 Articles in the reputed journals.
She successfully guided Doctoral programmes for 17 Scholars.
For all these, she received “Service Appreciation Award” by Lions Club of Karaikudi in the year 2004. The renowned Tamil Sage His Holiness Kundrakudi Adigalar honoured her by awarding “Kalvi Mamani” Award in the year 2008.

Having served in college and University for the past 25 years in various capacities as Lecturer, Reader and Professor he had industrial experience for one year in N.L.C Ltd., Neyveli.
Research Guidance
With his rich experience in teaching he has so far guided 22Ph.D scholars and 80 M.Phil scholars on various topics of Corporate Law, Corporate Finance, Corporate Accounting and Corporate Management. Currently he is supervising 12 Ph.D. Scholars.
Publications
He has published 90 articles and research papers in journals and business newspapers of good repute. To mention a few, are chartered secretary, Indian Journal of Marketing, Journal of Manpower, Indian Journal of Public Administration, Southern Economist. He has authored two books and eight distance education study materials. He has also reviewed eight books so far.

Prof. Manickavasagam has served as Professor and Head of the Department of Corporate Secretaryship for 4 years form 2003 till 2007. As Head of the Department he introduced many innovative methods of teaching such as
