Prof. S. Subbiah hails from a small village - Periyapattamangalam, Avudayarkovil Taluk in Pudukkottai District. He had his under graduation from Alagappa Arts College, Karaikudi and pursued his M.A. English Literature from A.V.V.M. Shri Pushpam College, Poondi. He had completed M.Ed. and M.Phil. programmes in Madurai Kamaraj University and subsequently obtained his Ph.D. in Education Technology – English (Inter-disciplinary) from Bharathidasan University. He was born on 13th February 1962.
Prof. S. Subbiah has a versatile experience for over 23 years at University and College level teaching. He has an experience both in the field of English and Education. After his career at various colleges and institutions for over a decade, he joined Alagappa University in the year 2006 as Lecturer. Then on, he rose to the position of the Professor and Head of the Department of English and Foreign Languages of Alagappa University before taking up this new assignment as Vice-Chancellor.
The Vice-Chancellor has about 2 decades of exceptional administrative experience in many Universities and Colleges in Tamil Nadu.
He served as the Member of the Convener Committee which exercised the powers and performing the duties of the Vice-Chancellor at Bharathidasan University, Trichy during the years 1997 and 2001.
Similarly, he was also the Member of the Convener Committee in the place of the Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University during the year 2009.
Again, he was entrusted upon the responsibilities at Bharathidasan University between July 2013 and June 2014 as Member of the Convener Committee.
He had the unique opportunity to be a Member of the Search Committee which went into the selection of Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University in 2010.
He was a Member of the Syndicate of Bharathidasan University for 3 terms during the last decade and a Member of the Syndicate of Madurai Kamaraj University between 2009 and 2012. He was also a Member of the Senate of Bharathidasan University for 3 times starting from 1996. He is a Member of the Senate of Alagappa University since 2012. He was the Convener and Member of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Inspection Committee, Southern Regional Centre, Bangalore since 2007. He was Member of Governing Councils of various Colleges, Appointment and Affiliation Committees in various Universities
As a Researcher, he had focused his Ph.D. research in the area of “Application of ICT in English Language Teacher Education”. He has produced 27 Ph.Ds in the domain of English and Education. Presently he is guiding 09 scholars for their Ph.D. Totally 83 M.Phil. scholars had the privilege of being guided by him. He has more than 20 years of research experience to his credit.
The Vice-Chancellor has undertaken and completed 14 research projects which were sponsored by funding agencies like UGC, Government of Tamil Nadu, MHRD, AURF, DIET, British Council sponsored HE-Link Project, UNESCO to name a few. The total amount of funds generated through these projects is more than Rs. 25 lakhs.
The Vice-Chancellor has a wide variety of publications to his credit, which runs up to 94. He has authored / edited / translated / co-authored 16 books in the field of English and Education. He has 30 research articles to his credit which were published in reputed international and national journals.
The Vice-Chancellor has made his impact in the fields of English and Education in 25 International Conferences and his papers were greatly acknowledged in 48 national level Conferences and Seminars for innovation and quality. He organized 4 International Conferences and 5 National Conference/Symposia as Organizing Secretary / Member during his academic career.
The Vice-Chancellor had made his mark in the international education scenario also. He was invited to deliver Special Lectures and he made his impact in International Conferences during his visits abroad. He made visits to countries like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman & Ras al-Khaimah during 2009 for International Collaborations and Networking.
In the year 2010, he visited Ghana and Kenya on various academic assignments. The rich experience he received during these visits will be used to lever the level of Higher Education.
He is a Life Member of Society for Educational Technology Research and Development (SETRAD) of Bharathidasan University; Life Member of Indian Academy of Social Sciences, Allahabad; Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi; Life Member of All India Association for Educational Research, Bhubaneswar; Vice-President of SETRAD; Member of British Council, Chennai.
He is also a Chairman, Board of Studies and Member of Boards of Studies in English and Education at various Universities. He is a Member in seven Editorial Committees. He involved himself in Editorial Committees of various News Bulletins, Newsletters and Souvenirs.
He is President of Pavendar Bharathidasan Ilakia Peravai, Pudukkottai; President of International Tamil Cultural Movement in Pudukkottai District; Rotarian in Pudukkottai Rotary Club and Patron, Pudukkottai Basket Ball Association.
The Vice-Chancellor has delivered close to 100 lectures as part of the extension activities. He delivered talks on varied topics of contemporary interest. He has involved himself to upgrade the quality of Faculty Members by being part of Orientation and Refresher Programs as Resource Persons in various Universities.
His convocation addresses at various colleges inspired the budding graduates. His involvement in various academic extension activities has helped the institution to grow from strength to strength.
The Vice-Chancellor brings in a versatile, professional, high end academic and administrative experience which will be harnessed to enhance the quality standards at Alagappa University. He has major vision of making this University a ‘National Centre of Excellence’ and subsequently a ‘World Class University’.
