Implementation of the Right To Information Act, 2005 at Alagappa University

 

 

            The Right to Information Act 2005 ensures the right to information for citizens to secure/ access information under the control of public authorities, in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority.

 

            Public authority here implies Alagappa University, Karaikudi established by an Act of Tamil Nadu Assembly in 1985.  The University is recognised by the University Grants Commission, a member of the Association of Indian Universities and a member of the Common Wealth Universities Association.  The University is accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade.

 

            The University is committed to providing quality education and research and serve the society through various extension activities.  The University is managed by statutory bodies such as Syndicate, Senate and Finance Committee.  The academic matters are decided by Boards of Studies and Standing Committee on Academic Affairs.

  There are Deputy Registrar, Assistant Registrars and Superintendents who carry out the day to day administrative work under the direct control and supervision of the Registrar who executes the policies of the Syndicate, Senate and other bodies under the Chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor.

 


Rules & Regulations

The rules and regulations are stipulated in the Act and Statutes of Alagappa University which contain the code of conduct for employees, powers, duties and responsibilities of the authorities.


Funds for the University
The funds for the University are obtained from U.G.C. and Tamil Nadu Government.  The faculty members of the University apply to various national and regional funding agencies and obtain funds for carrying out projects.  The Distance Education Programmes are another source of funds to the University.  The funds are also generated by the creation of Endowments at the University.


Library
The University has a Central Library with around 65,000 volumes of books and 700 journals and magazines.  The library is not only used by students and staff of the University but also by the staff and students of the nearby institutions.


Contact Person
Any person who wishes to obtain any information shall make a request in writing in English or Tamil with a fee of Rs.10/- only to the Deputy Registrar, Alagappa University, Karaikudi.  Correspondence with any other person seeking information under this Act will not come under its scope.  While seeking the information, the applicant need not specify any reason for requesting the information.  Such a request will be disposed of within 30 days of the receipt of the request.  In case of rejection of request of the applicant, the Registrar of Alagappa University is the appellate authority.


Exemption from Disclosure of Information
Providing information which will prejudicially affect the name and reputation of the institution and/or the disclosure of such information would cause a breach of privilege of the statutory powers of the University bodies like Syndicate or Senate or Academic Council, Planning Board etc. is exempted and would fall outside the scope of this transparency.
