Greetings!               

It is pleasure to issue this message from my desk. The University is celebrating its Silver Jubilee Year, 2009-10 now. In the SJY we need to do remarkably well that will speak high of us until the Golden Jubilee Year. With this mindset in everyone, targets are simple to surpass. ‘Enniyæ Enniyangu Eidhuba, Enniyær Thinniyær Aagap Perin- said St.Poet Thiruvalluvar. The University is steadfast in achieving ‘ESTEEM’, i.e., ‘Educational, Social, Technological, Environmental and Economic Magnificence’,through ‘Excellence in Action’.

Padmabushan Philanthropist Dr. RM.  Alagappa Chettiar. the Illustrious Founder of the University said (slightly modifying Poet Tennyson’ lines) about 53 years ago, on 2nd September 1956, ‘My happiness is boundless, limitless, because my happiness does not consist naturally in my own happiness, but my happiness consists in the happiness of the thousands of students young and old, boy and girl that read in our vast educational campus’. Happy people have helped others in more ways than one. Happiness lies much in giving and gifting. Because, ‘Giving is twice blessed’ as versed rightly by English Poet William Shakespeare.  Alagappa University is committed to give the best of educational opportunities, to the rural and downtrodden to fulfill the wish of its illustrious founder.

Change + Growth = Development: The visionary writer, Alvin Toffler of the fabulous book, Future Shock, would say, ‘the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn’. The University is effecting much change with focus on quality. Growth sinews are stepped everywhere. These efforts lead to development, as, Change + Growth = Development.

Excellence thro Human Resources:   There is a substantial capacity addition by fresh recruitment of faculty members. The non-teaching fraternity is developed through motivational orientations to exhibit ‘responsiveness’ and trained hands-on as to IT to exhibit more ‘mouse and click’ competence.

Built Infrastructure: There is an authentic space addition in the University in the recent past and now.
Buildings and facilities costing about Rs. 39 Crores are underway or soon to be taken up. In 2 years time, the University will have enough and more space on par with Central Universities.

Modern Lab Equipment: Just installed Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSM -710 the state of art latest model) and Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT- PCR). Alagappa University becomes one of the few Universities to have this kind of modern equipment to give fillip to top-end research in bio-sciences.

DST-FIST: To the list of DST–FIST Departments of Industrial Chemistry and Physics, the Department of Biotechnology joins now with allocation of Rs. 50 lakhs. Every other Science Department must strive best to get this kind of coveted feat.

Funded Research: The faculty members are oriented to scout funded projects. 70 projects at a cost of about Rs. 10 Crores are on-going. Copious Funds flow from DST, DBT, UGC, CSIR, MoEn., ICMR, DRDO, BHEL, SSCP, CIIL, MHRD, IGNOU, Banks, etc.

AURF Projects: Under AURF 39 projects with University fund of about Rs. 25 lakhs and 5 Overseas Collaborative Projects with about Rs. 25 lakhs are sanctioned in 2009-10. Another 20 projects with appropriate allocation are expected soon. Thus the culture of every faculty with a project is inculcated.

Quality in our Pursuits: For 2009 Nobel Prizes were announced in October. We are profusely happy and we salute that great Tamilian, Dr.‘Venki’ who got the ‘chemistry’ to get the Nobel Chemistry Prize. World needs more such award winning works. Courage and challenge can engine you, and you may conquer. Our researchers need to take vows to come with ‘smart’ not ‘simple’ works. Higher benchmarks should be ours in every domain of ‘PEARL’, that is, Pedagogy, Extension, Administration, Research & Learning.
