Genesis

Department of Special Education & Rehabilitation Science was established in January 2016. This is the first State University to start an Exclusive Department for the human resource development to the field of Special Education which in turn serves to the welfare of the students with disabilities. This department was started in continuation of UGC Innovative Programme with financial Assistance from UGC worth of 60 Lakhs. This is the only state University Department to have an exclusive Centre for Multimodal Material Production for Differently Abled and its own two Special Schools for Persons with Disabilities (Intellectual Disabilities) & (Autism) to serve children with various disabilities.

  1. To be a leading Special Education Department that provides a transformative education to create innovative human resources to the field of Special Education and serve the society.

Mission

  1. To offer special education programmes for the preparation of novice special educators to serve the society
  2. To carry out research for the development of new and innovative teaching and learning strategies in collaboration with other academic and research institutes
  3. To run various in house training programmes for the special educators, parents and children with disabilities
  4. To envision itself as a leader at local, regional, National and International levels in improving the educational opportunities, accommodations and services that support children with disabilities and their families.

Salient Features of the Department

The main focus of the department is moulding professionals in the field of the disability studies, education provision for different disability sectors and their rehabilitation services. The service is rendered in four fold dimensions i.e.

Teaching Services

The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Science offers a range of specialized teaching services tailored to meet the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities. Through programs such as B.Ed. Special Education focusing on Visual Impairment (V.I.) and Intellectual Disabilities (I.D.), M.Ed. Special Education specializing in Visual Impairment, and the innovative B.Ed.-M.Ed. Integrated Special Education (I.D.) pathway, students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to become effective educators in the field. Additionally, M.Sc. Psychology courses complement these offerings, providing essential insights into human behavior and cognition crucial for understanding and addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Training Services

A cornerstone of the Department's mission is the provision of comprehensive training programs designed to empower professionals and caregivers in the field of special education and rehabilitation. Need-based vocational training, career guidance, and personal and psychological guidance training are offered to equip individuals with practical skills and support networks necessary for effective engagement with individuals with disabilities. Moreover, specialized training programs cater to teachers from primary to higher levels, ensuring they possess the requisite competencies to foster inclusive learning environments. Short-term continuing rehabilitation programs further enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals already working in the field, keeping them abreast of the latest developments and best practices in special education.

Research

At the forefront of advancing knowledge and understanding in the field of special education and rehabilitation, the Department facilitates cutting-edge research initiatives at both national and international levels.

The Ph.D. program in Special Education provides a rigorous academic platform for scholars to pursue in-depth investigations into critical areas of inquiry, contributing significantly to the scholarly discourse and practical applications in the field. Research projects, conducted at both national and international levels, explore diverse dimensions of disability, intervention strategies, and policy implications, fostering collaboration and innovation to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities globally.

Artificial Limb Production Unit

The Artificial Limb Production Unit epitomizes the intersection of innovation, compassion, and technology, offering individuals with disabilities the opportunity to regain mobility, independence, and quality of life. Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and expertise, the unit designs and fabricates custom prosthetic limbs tailored to the unique anatomical and functional requirements of each individual. Beyond its technical proficiency, the unit embodies a spirit of empathy and empowerment, empowering individuals to overcome physical limitations and pursue their aspirations with confidence and dignity.

Braille and Audio Book Production Unit

The Braille and Audio Book Production Unit at Alagappa University embodies a commitment to equitable access to knowledge and information for individuals with visual impairments. Through its dedication to producing high-quality Braille and audio materials, the unit ensures that individuals with visual impairments can fully engage with academic, literary, and recreational content. Alumni

The Department has established an alumni cell to foster a strong and enduring connection with former students, recognizing their invaluable contribution to the department's legacy. This initiative seeks to cultivate a vibrant community of alumni who remain engaged, connected, and invested in the department's continued growth and success.

Aims & Objectives

The primary aim of the alumni cell is to nurture and sustain meaningful relationships between the department and its alumni network. Through various initiatives and engagements, the cell endeavors to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Foster a sense of belonging and pride among alumni towards the department.
  2. Facilitate networking opportunities and professional connections among alumni.
  3. Provide avenues for alumni to contribute to the department's development and enhancement.
  4. Promote collaboration and knowledge sharing between alumni and current students.
  5. Preserve and celebrate the achievements and contributions of alumni to the department and society at large.
Alumni Programme

The alumni cell organizes a diverse range of programs and activities throughout the year to engage and reconnect alumni with the department. These programs include alumni reunions, networking events, professional development workshops, guest lectures, and mentoring initiatives. Additionally, the cell collaborates with alumni to facilitate career guidance sessions, industry interactions, and alumni-led initiatives aimed at enriching the student experience and fostering personal and professional growth.

The alumni cell invites all former students to actively participate and contribute to the department's vibrant alumni community.
