About the Department
Genesis

The Department of Fisheries Science was established in 2018 with the primary objective of cultivating proficient and skilled professionals in the fields of Fishery biology, Capture and culture fishery including inland and marine segments and Post harvest technology. Prof. C. Govindasamy was the first Head of the Department and retired in June 2020. After him, Prof. E. Kannapiran successfully served as the Head of the Department till December 2023 and was now appointed as the Director, Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE), Alagappa University. It is steadfast in its commitment to provide excellent Postgraduate programmes. Operating under the Choice-Based Credit System, the department offers a Master of Science in Fisheries Science Programme, accommodating a capacity of 20 students. The Department maintains the aquarium and percolation tank in the University campus which gives pleasure and calming effect on people.

Facilities

The Fisheries Department has a smart classroom, lab, aquarium, culture pond and 24 × 7 Internet facilities. Students will be provided with a computer, LCD for their presentation. Many department-level clubs such as Seminar and Quiz clubs, Environmental clubs, Journal clubs, and Cultural clubs are available to enrich the students’ confidence, willingness, and ability to take on academic, professional, and personal challenges.

The department boasts an extensive collection comprising reference books, textbooks, current journals, manuals, bulletins, and theses. This diverse array of resources is meticulously organized to facilitate the gathering, arrangement, and dissemination of information, effectively meeting the academic community's informational needs. Furthermore, internet facilities are readily accessible for students seeking additional references. The Department has a well-established museum with a good collection of Fish specimens of living and non-living resources for students and the Public.

Placement


The University's Placement Cell is committed to delivering job-focused training to students and overseeing their career advancement.
