What is the Genesis of the University?

Alagappa University has emerged from the galaxy of institutions (Arts College, Training College, Sports College, Polytechnic College, Engineering College etc) initially founded by the great philanthropist and educationist Dr.RM.Alagappa Chettiar during 1950's. He donated 440 acre green and lush land to the Government. Alagappa University was established through a Special Act of the State Legislature by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 9th May 1985.

By Road: The University is situated in the town Karaikudi (in the district of Sivaganga, in the State of Tamil Nadu). Karaikudi is well connected with buses from neighbouring cities such as Madurai (80 km), Tiruchirappalli (100 km), Dindigul (100 km), Rameshwaram (145 km). The distance between Karaikudi New Bus Stand and University is just 1.5 km.

By Train: The distance between Karaikudi Railway Junction (code: KKDI) and the University is just 1 km. There are three daily express trains from Chennai Egmore (code: MS); 12605 Pallavan Express, 22661 Rameswaram Express, 16851 Rameswaram Express. In addition, daily passenger trains operate between Tiruchirappalli (code: TPJ) and Karaikudi.

By Air: Nearby airports are Madurai (Code: IMX) and Tiruchirappalli (Code: TRZ). It takes about 1 hour 30 minutes by car to reach the University from these airports.

Alagappa University is Arts & Science University offering programmes in the Faculties of Arts, Education, Management and Science. The University has 44 Departments, 9 Centres and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus. 46 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram are part of the University. Of which one Autonomous College and one Alagappa University Model Constituent College of Arts and Science are located in Kilakkarai and Paramakudi respectively.

For admission to PhD programmes, Pre-PhD Qualifying Entrance Examinations are conducted twice in a year (February and August). Candidates have to apply online and appear for examinations to be held at Karaikudi. Successful candidates will be provided Eligibility Certificate valid for 5 years. The candidate has to approach the Research Supervisor available in the University Department and present the Research proposal before the Departmental Research Committee (DRC). Based on the recommendation by the DRC, admission to Ph.D programme will be made.

Alagappar Museum, Tamil Culture Museum, Mini Theatre, Central Library-RFID, Percolation Tank, Alagappar Alumni Garden, Science Campus.

Apart from Central Library with RFID, faculty level libraries are available. All Academic and Hostel buildings are connected with free Intranet, Internet and Wi-Fi. In addition, free Wi-Fi hot spots are available in select places of student centric points (University Canteen, Science Campus canteen, Library Garden, Management Block Garden etc).

What is the level of accreditation, recognition and status of Alagappa University?

Alagappa University is a State Government University situated in the town of Karaikudi. It was brought into existence by an Act of the Tamilnadu State Legislature in May 1985. The University has emerged from a galaxy of Institutions initially founded by the munificent and multifaceted personality Padma Bhusan Dr.Rm.Alagappa Chettiar.

Alagappa University is recognized by UGC. The University is Accredited with “A+” grade by NAAC. The “h” index of the University is 71. The University has secured 28 rank among Indian Universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2019) instituted by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Secured 28th position in QS India Ranking, 104th position in QS BRICS Ranking and 216th position in QS Aisa Ranking 2019.

Preferred timing for telephonic contact is between 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM and between 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM during week-days (Monday to Friday).

Saturdays and Sundays are holidays.

Examination

  1. The academic year is from July to June.
  2. For all regular students, the examinations are conducted twice in a year programs (in November for odd semester and in April for even semester).
  3. Examinations for non-semester programs are conducted in April.
  4. For the students of Distance Education, the examinations are conducted twice in a year for semester programs (in December for odd semester and in May for even semester). For Calendar year admitted students under Distance Education mode, examinations are conducted in May for odd semester and in December for even semester.

All eligible students have to submit their examination application by online mode only. The link is available at University website www.alagappauniversity.ac.in

Students who have submitted exam applications online can print the e-hall tickets instantly after the online submission of applications.

Attendance& Eligibility (CBCS)

Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) norms for appearing the examination are as under;

  1. Students possessing 75% and above of attendance are eligible.
  2. Students possessing 70-74% of attendance should pay a condonation fee of Rs.100/- per course.
  3. Students possessing 60-69% of attendance should pay a condonation fee of Rs.150/- per course and to produce Medical Certificate.
  4. Students possessing below 60% of attendance are not eligible.

Attendance& Eligibility (non-CBCS)

For non-CBCS students, the norms for appearing the examination are as under;

  1. Students possessing 80% and above of attendance are eligible.
  2. Students possessing 70-79% of attendance should pay a condonation fee of Rs.100/- per course.
  3. Students possessing 60-69% of attendance should pay a condonation fee of Rs.150/- per course and to produce Medical Certificate.
  4. Students possessing below 60% of attendance are not eligible.

Results

Examination results are normally published and hosted in the University website within 15 to 35 days from the last date of examinations.

Results will not be published for candidates who have dues in course fee, involved in malpractice, not properly entered / shaded the Register number in answer script and the like. The results will be announced and certificates will be issued only after clearing the said issue(s).,

Certificates

Generally it takes one month after the publication of results. Certificates will not be despatched to default candidates having dues in course fee, involved in malpractice, not properly entered / shaded Register number in answer script etc. The certificates will be despatched only after clearing the said issue(s).

The duplicate certificate will be issued to the students on submission of Requisition Letter addressed to the Controller of Examinations, Alagappa University, Karaikudi. Photocopy of a valid photo identity card (Attested) like Aadhar card / Voter Id / Driving License. Demand draft in favour of “The Registrar, Alagappa University” payable at Karaikudi.

The Fee for Duplicate Provisional Certificate is Rs.1000

The Fee for Duplicate Cumulative Mark Statement is Rs.1000

The Fee for Duplicate Degree Certificate is Rs.1500.

The degrees are to be approved by the Chancellor of the University in the Annual Convocation function which will be normally held between August and February every year.

For the cases of non-payment of course fee, Cumulative Mark Statement (CMS) and Provisional Certificate (PC) are retained in the office. In such cases, candidates are advised to contact the Director, Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), Alagappa University, Karaikudi for payment of pending fee and produce the "No Dues Certificate" to the office of Controller of Examination. On receipt of "No Dues Certificate", Mark Statement and Provisional Certificate will be despatched.

Undelivered & Returned Certificates

The student should submit a request letter to the Controller of Examination with the following;

  1. Self-addressed A4 size envelope stamped Rs.40,
  2. Latest postal address,
  3. Photocopy of the Mark Statement already received from this office (if any),
  4. Photocopy of any one of the ID Card (ID card issued by DDE of Alagappa University / PAN Card / Driving License / Voter card / Aadhar Card).

Address Change

Normally, the certificate is sent to the student to the address mentioned while on admission to the Distance program. If the candidate has moved to new address, the candidate must inform the new address to the University by paying a fee of Rs.100. Then only, the certificate will be sent to the new address.

Genuineness Certificate

Genuineness certificate is issued immediately on receipt of request letter. The letter should accompany photocopy of Consolidated Mark Statement / Provisional Certificate / Degree / Diploma / certificate and Fee for issue of Genuineness Certificate Demand draft of Rs.750/- per copy*(for Government and Government Aided Institutions) or Rs.1000/-per copy * (for Non-Governmental organization and individuals) drawn in favour of “The Registrar, Alagappa University” payable at Karaikudi. Fee for issue of Genuineness Certificate for Aborad - 50 USD

For every additional Genuineness copy of the certificate - Rs. 250 /-

Further, for the issue of above said certificates, the following additional charge is to be collected as Search Fee

Transcripts

Transcripts will be issued immediately on receipt of request letter. The letter should accompany; Photocopy of Consolidated Mark Statement / Provisional Certificate / Degree / Diploma / certificate of candidate. Fee for issue of Transcript Rs. 3000 / per copy* (inculding postal charges). Fee for issue of Transcript for Abroad - 50 USD

For every additional transcript copy of the certificate - Rs. 500 /- (india) and Abroad 20 USD

What are the regulations related to "Internal Marks" for Distance Education

When was Distance Education programmes started?

Started from the year 1992.

Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and obtained 2(f) and 12(B) status to receive UGC and central government grants. The Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi accorded Ex-Post Facto approval for 108 programmes offered through distance mode (F.No.DEC/AU/KKD/TN/4425/2008, dated 24.11.2009) with effect from 1995. DEC accorded recognition to Distance Education programmes (F.No.DEC/Recog/2010/2289, dated 04.08.2010) valid for 3 years till 2012- 13. The Distance Education Bureau (DEB), New Delhi granted recognition for offering ODL programmes for 2013-14 (F.No.UGC/DEB/Recog./2013/1252-1256, Dt.20.08.2013) and for 2014-15 (F.No.UGC/DEB/AU/TN/2013/7177-7181, Dt.27.05.2014). Alagappa University is accredited with A+ Grade by NAAC (CGPA 3.64) in the year 2017 and Graded as Category-1 University by MHRD-UGC. By virtue of holding Category-1 status, Distance Education programmes of Alagappa University are recognized by DEB (Gazette notification F.No 1-8-2017(CPP-II) Dt.12.02.2018. DEB granted approval to offer ODL programmes (F.No. 74-2/2018 (DEB-I), Dt.08.05.2019 as well as earlier notification Dt.26.03.2019).

In compliance to UGC-DEB notification, admission to Distance Education programmes of Alagappa University can be made through 150+ Learning centres situated within the State of Tamil Nadu only.

Fee Structure

Candidates can seek admission in the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of University itself at Karaikudi as direct students. Candidates can also enrol through authorized 150+ Learning centres situated across the State of Tamil Nadu. There are two sessions of admission every year (during July-August) and (during January-February).

As per UGC notification and compliance, consolidated list of students admitted (July-August 2018 session) and (January-February 2019 session) are compiled and submitted to UGC-DEB.
