Prof. G. Ravi, born in a traditional agricultural family in a village near Chidambaram, Cuddalore, pursued his schooling in Panchayat Union School. After completing his UG and PG programmes in Physics at TBML College (Bharathidasan University) Porayar (1984-1989), he moved to Anna University, Chennai to pursue his M.Phil and Ph.D. His research focuses on materials science, specifically, growing large-size single crystals for Lasers and Optical memories, thin film deposition for optoelectronic devices, and Nano materials synthesize for energy storage, sensors and environmental applications.

Joining as a Lecturer in Physics at Alagappa University, Karaikudi in Feb. 1995, he was promoted to Professor in 2010 and became Head of the Department of Physics in 2015. Since August 2022, he has assumed the role of Vice-Chancellor of Category - I Alagappa University.

He has been a JSPS fellow at NIMS, Japan, and a Visiting Professor and Honorable Guest Professor at Shizuoka University, Japan. With 30 years of teaching experience and 35 years in research, he has published over 477 articles in International Journals and presented 409 papers at national and international conferences. His research papers have been cited 14824 times by the International research community, giving him an h-index of 63 and i-10 index of 308. He has also served as a potential reviewer for various International Journals and acts as Editor of 2 Journals, written seven book chapters, and completed 11 major research projects with the worth of 403 lakhs from funding agencies like UGC, DST, TNSCST, and AICTE. He has produced 28 PhDs and 50 M.Phil's, and has been honored with 34 awards at national and international levels, including the first D.Sc. Award in the Department of Physics of Alagappa University, Karaikudi. He holds 7 granted and 2 published patents.

Prof. G. Ravi has also visited 23 countries in all continents for research collaboration. In addition to teaching and research, he has been engaged with various academic responsibilities like Director - IQAC, Dean, Industry & Consultancy, and Coordinator for UGC-SPARC, UGC-SAP & DST-FIST, and Deputy Coordinator in DST-PURSE schemes, and has held memberships in various national and international forums. He was also awarded the Fellow of the Royal Society (FRSC), London and selected by MHRD, Govt. of India for Leadership Programme (LEAP). He has been awarded as TANSA and Senior Scientist by Academy of Sciences, Chennai. He also honored with “Honorary Colonel Commandant” by National Cadet Corps, Government of India. As Head of the Department, he has motivated his colleagues to publish high-quality papers in highly reputed International Journals, leading to over 600 research papers during 2015-2022 and that lead to h-index of 77 from 28. He stands number one at Alagappa University in terms of research publications and academic contribution.

As Vice-Chancellor, his rich experience and research contributions are expected to contribute substantially to the growth of Alagappa University in terms of NAAC accreditation, NIRF, and QS World Ranking.
