About the Centre
Genesis

The Centre for Women’s Studies at Alagappa University was established in 1989 as the first University Grants Commission (UGC)-approved Centre for Women’s Studies in Tamil Nadu. Since its inception, the Centre has played a significant role in promoting women’s empowerment, reducing poverty and addressing various forms of discrimination, in alignment with national development goals. The Centre is committed to improving the status and quality of life of women at all levels through a wide range of academic, research and community-oriented initiatives. Its activities encompass Teaching, Training, Research, Field Action, Documentation, Publication, Dissemination and Advocacy, Seminars and Workshops, and Networking and Coordination with various agencies and institutions.

  1. To utilize the potential resources and capabilities of women for development, thereby contributing to the holistic development of the Nation.
Mission
  1. To play an interventionist role by integrating a gender perspective into diverse domains of knowledge, policy and practice.
  2. To act as a catalyst for promoting and strengthening Women’s Studies through teaching, research, dissemination of knowledge and field action.
Highlights of the Centre
  1. First UGC approved Centre for Women’s Studies in Tamil Nadu.
  2. The only Centre for Women’s Studies having Free Legal Aid under the aegis of the State Legal Services Authority.
  3. First University Centre to run Tamil Nadu Government Mahalir Thittam.
  4. Implemented Human Rights Education in Schools in Sivaganga District.
  5. Nodal Agency for Gender Sensitization Training Programme for all Police Personnel in Tamil Nadu.
  6. Promoting Agency - NABARD-Post Office SHG Linkage –Micro Credit Scheme.
  7. Nodal Agency for conducting Orientation Training Program for Women Councilors of Urban Local Bodies in Tamil Nadu in Collaboration with Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies, Coimbatore. (World Bank Project)
  8. Organized Intensive Child Rights Campaign in schools of Sivaganga District.
  9. Served as a District Coordinating Agency to implement Total Sanitation Campaign in Ramnad District
  10. Wider networking with Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations.
  11. Involved in all Government Programmes for Women in Tamil Nadu.
  12. Member on Committees of various government bodies relating to women development.
  13. Entrepreneurship Development Programme under HRD Scheme of National Mission on Food Processing: Ministry of Food Processing Government of India.
