About the Department

Realizing the vital need to cater to the professional requirements of humanity, Alagappa University has initiated a post-graduation program in the fields of journalism and mass communication.

Genesis

The Master of Journalism and Mass Communication (MJMC) was introduced in 2014 in the Department of Lifelong Learning, and later it was renamed as M.A. Journalism and Mass Communication as per the UGC nomenclature in the Department of Lifelong Learning. In the year 2015, the M.Phil. in Media and Communication was introduced.

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was established at Alagappa University in 2019 under the Faculty of Arts with the objective of crafting the students become professionals in the press and media through hands-on, skill-based training. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has students from all over the country, especially from Kerala and West Bengal. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has students from all over the country, especially from Kerala and West Bengal.

The MA in Journalism and Mass Communication is a unique course that includes all media like press, radio, television, digital, alternative, and new media, focusing more on practicum than the current trend of only concentrating on visual media in the nation. The students have a wider scope and are currently placed in the leading media channels, the press, and academia, also becoming independent freelancers.

The value-added courses for prospective media students are added apart from the regular curriculum, like sports journalism, digital journalism, film appreciation, investigative journalism, forensic journalism, alternative journalism tour and travel journalism, and embedded journalism, giving added space for employability and confident placements to the students, which is distinctive in nature of the department.

To promote excellence in mass communication through instruction, research, and professional skill-oriented practice for preparing future professionals for media and mass communication and setting global standards by using state-of-the-art technology for building a knowledge-driven information society with logical application by contributing to human development and communicating with values and ethics.

Mission

To create an energizing learning and working environment that nurtures innovative ideas, creativity, inquiry, and rationality so that the students’ become leaders and innovators in the domain of media and mass communication. To accomplish this goal, the program couples practical experience with theoretical course work and supports a strong program of co-curricular, extracurricular, and internship activities on and off-field.

Further strive to educate ethical, socially responsible, well-rounded, and fair-minded journalists, media personnel, and producers in the field of media and mass communication and make them lifelong learners in society who can significantly consume as well as produce media content for personal and societal development.

  6. Distinctive coaching classes are organized for SLET and NET exams.
Scope and Furtherance
  1. There is a wide scope for immediate placement in the press and media as content writers, field reporters, cameramen and women, editorial assistants, TV and radio jackies and readers, content creators and producers, etc.

  3. Sound knowledge to pursue doctoral research.
  4. Become independent free lancers in media and entrepreneurs to start independent media forums online and offline.

  4. The Grievances and Redressal Council of the department was functioning twice a month to chart out and solve grievances raised by the students.
  5. The cultural council also met twice a month and made arrangements for the cultural events and other competitions during the year.
  6. The academic council met two times in a month to fulfil the curriculum and practical needs, indoor and outdoor practical’s extra.
  7. The placement council met twice in a month and arranged an internship program and placement requirements according to the situation and need.
