Department of Special Education & Rehabilitation Science was established in January 2016. This is the first State University to start an Exclusive Department for the human resource development to the field of Special Education which in turn serves to the welfare of the students with disabilities. This department was started in continuation of UGC Innovative Programme with financial Assistance from UGC worth of 60 Lakhs. This is the only state University Department to have an exclusive Centre for Multimodal Material Production for Differently Abled and its own two Special Schools for Persons with Disabilities (Intellectual Disabilities) & (Autism) to serve children with various disabilities.
The main focus of the department is moulding professionals in the field of the disability studies, education provision for different disability sectors and their rehabilitation services. The service is rendered in four fold dimensions i.e.

Through programs such as B.Ed. Special Education focusing on Visual Impairment (V.I.) and Intellectual Disabilities (I.D.), M.Ed. Special Education specializing in Visual Impairment, and the innovative B.Ed.-M.Ed. Integrated Special Education (I.D.) pathway, students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to become effective educators in the field. Additionally, M.Sc. Psychology courses complement these offerings, providing essential insights into human behavior and cognition crucial for understanding and addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities.
A cornerstone of the Department's mission is the provision of comprehensive training programs designed to empower professionals and caregivers in the field of special education and rehabilitation. Need-based vocational training, career guidance, and personal and psychological guidance training are offered to equip individuals with practical skills and support networks necessary for effective engagement with individuals with disabilities. Moreover, specialized training programs cater to teachers from primary to higher levels, ensuring they possess the requisite competencies to foster inclusive learning environments. Short-term continuing rehabilitation programs further enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals already working in the field, keeping them abreast of the latest developments and best practices in special education.

The Braille and Audio Book Production Unit at Alagappa University embody a commitment to equitable access to knowledge and information for individuals with visual impairments.
