The Department of Banking Management was established in Alagappa University in the year 1989 with the objective of preparing the students for managerial positions in banks and offering research opportunities in the field of banking and insurance. Being the pioneer in India in offering a Post Graduate programme in Banking and Insurance, it has carved out a niche for itself in the academic map of the country. Its curriculum, teaching methodology and faculty expertise have stimulated many institutions of higher learning to design academic programmes of similar nature. With a rich legacy of over three decades, the Department has been grooming skilled professionals for the dynamic financial sector.

All seminars/workshops were sponsored by renowned banks such as Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank, the then Bank of Madura, Karur Vysya Bank, the erstwhile Lakshmi Vilas Bank (DBS) and the HDFC bank. The department has the credit of getting sponsorship from the RBI, the central bank of the country for organizing a seminar on the topic of national importance-Financial inclusion in March 2011. The department has earned the credit of being the only university in the country identified by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for extending financial support for organizing national seminars.
Banking teachers need to be familiarized with the latest trends in the dynamic financial environment. In order to enable them to keep abreast of developments in financial sector, the department with the funding support of the UGC has organized three Refresher courses in Banking and Financial services sector.

Equipped with smart boards, computers with internet access, and LCD projectors, our classrooms facilitate effective teaching and learning. Academic activities are further supported through bulletin boards and debate forums.
Our computer centre accommodating 71 systems with 24/7 internet access. Additionally, it provides a dedicated System Programmer and help desk for competitive examination preparation, including Bank Competitive Examinations and Civil Services Examination. Printing, photocopying, and scanning facilities are also available. Students can utilize campus-wide Wi-Fi with dedicated bandwidth for internet connectivity.
The School of Management Library, situated within the Faculty of Management campus, offers easy access to a vast collection of books and journals. This complements the resources of the Central Library located in the Administrative campus. Both libraries provide over 20,000 books for management students, along with internet services, CD-ROM databases, and e-services. The department subscribes to the Hindu and the Hindu Business Line newspapers facilitating students to update the current developments in banking and finance.
Our conference halls come in various capacities, including 800, 550, 300, and 200 seats. Equipped with digital smart boards, video conferencing systems, projectors, electronic podiums, public address systems, and LCD projectors, they are ideal for organizing seminars, guest lectures, and meetings.
The department adopts a three dimensional approach in case of research viz., research guidance, undertaking funded projects and dissemination of research findings. All faculty members of the department are the approved research supervisors. Research guidance is offered both to the academicians and industry practitioners. So far, the department has produced 34 Ph.Ds and 25 M.Phil Scholars. Total number of PG projects guided by the faculty members stand at 2163. The Department has collaborated with different banks facilitating hands on practical training to our students from 1990 onwards. Following is the list of banks being associated with the Department for Institutional Internship:
The special feature is that during Covid-19 period, (academic year 2020-2021 & 2021-2022) also online training was arranged by the Department collaborating with “Global Gyan” Ltd., who in association with Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) offered an online training programme entitled as ‘Smart Manager Programme’ in which 120 of our students participated and received their Training Certificates.
Three pre-placement training programs were organised since 2021-22 to the students to prepare the CV and make them aware of the employability skills needed for their recruitment in the financial services sector. Mr.AL.Ramanathan, Former General Manager, Pandyan Grama Bank was the resource person for the first pre-placement workshop. The second workshop was adorned by Mr.Vinothbabu, Trainer, MaFoi Strategic Consultants (Pvt) Ltd., Chennai and the third workshop was conducted by VERANDA RACE Karaikudi a reputed organisation coaching for Competitive Examinations for Banks and Civil Services.
