About the Department
Genesis

The Department of Botany, established in 2016, is one of the youngest departments of Alagappa University, offering postgraduate (PG) and Ph.D., programmes in Botany with the aim of producing scholarly botanists capable of addressing various challenges confronted both at the national and global levels. The department is equipped with a sophisticated characterization facility, which supports research activities in Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences.

The faculty members have received national and international awards, contributing to the department’s visibility. The research activities are mostly interdisciplinary. The thrust areas of research include Systematic Botany, Plant Conservation, Plant Production, Plant Physiology, Plant Tissue and Cell Culture, Applied Botany, Phytomedicines, Plant Pathology, Genomics, Recombinant DNA Technology. The research also focusses on assessing the impact of climate change on various flora and fauna.

In the past 7 years, the Department of Botany has published outstanding research articles in highly reputed scientific journals. Additionally, the department has produced 1 Ph.D., 81 M.Phil. graduates, and 122 M.Sc. graduates, showcasing its commitment to academic excellence. It regularly organizes seminars and conferences on topics of current interest in the area of Plant Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Mushroom Culture inviting national and international experts.

  1. To elevate the Department of Botany as a well-known centre of research in Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology initiating innovative research and making the next generation botanists to pursue their studies with academic rigour and productivity.
  2. To uphold the highest standards in publishing impactful research on Biodiversity and Climate Change so as to enhance the global visibility of the Department.

Infrastructure and facilities play a crucial role in academic institutions, providing essential scientific and technical services to support research conducted by Post-graduate (PG), Master of Philosophy (M.
