Genesis


The Department of Tourism and Hotel Management has been established to educate and prepare the students for a successful career in the dynamic and rapidly growing fields of tourism and hospitality industry. It provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students to meet the challenges of the global tourism and hospitality industry.

The Institute of Catering Science and Hotel Management was established in the year 2016. Being located in Chettinad which is known for its hospitality, cultural heritage and excellent cuisines, such an initiative was mainly meant for grooming the youngsters hailing from the rural pockets of the locality as well trained professionals in the field of Hospitality and Hotel Management. Initially the Institute offered B.Sc (Catering Science and Hotel Management) targeting those who had completed +2 in order to enable them to get gainful employment. In 2019, the Institute was rechristened as the Department of Tourism and Hotel management and MBA (Tourism Management) programme was launched. At present the Department offers two programmes viz., B.Sc in (Catering Science & Hotel Management) and MBA in (Tourism Management).

Mission:
  1. To provide a comprehensive and industry-relevant education to the students interested in pursuing careers in the tourism and hospitality sector.
  2. To focus on the development of practical skills and knowledge required for various roles within the tourism and hotel industry, including hotel management, tourism management, food and beverage management, and more.
  3. To build department - society linkage by organizing cookery training programmes and tourism awareness programmes on Indian tourism and International Tourism for the general public.
MOU:
  1. MoU was signed between Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, Alagappa University and Achireum LLC, USA. Duration of the MoU is from 03.11.2022 to 02.11.2025.
  2. MoU was signed between Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, Alagappa University and Saram International FZE, United Arab Emirates. Duration of the MoU is from 01.02.2023 to 31.01.2025.

Facilities


  1. BTK (Basic Training Kitchen): A basic training kitchen is fully equipped with modern kitchen appliances, this kitchen is used primarily to introduce the art of cookery to the students & it is launching pad for the new comers. Familiarity with the arts and science of cooking indeed is an essential part of hospitality operations.
  2. ADK (Advanced Training Kitchen): An advanced training kitchen is to train the students to meet the current demands. International cooking is taught in this lab. Modern techniques of cooking and presentation of food coupled with knowledge in hygiene, nutrition, cost control etc., are imparted here. Demonstrations and practical are carried out with the help of advanced and sophisticated equipments.
  3. Modern Restaurant & Mock Bar: Our Modern Restaurant is equipped with modern equipments and the ambience of the restaurants book as it is in a star hotel. The modern restaurant enables the students to learn various aspects of food and beverage services. Cooking with wine, flaming with brandy and rum are no more an incident but a regular happening here. Getting ready for various occasions from presidential gathering to marriage and fast food services to spirits, champagne and cocktails are part of the daily routine to make the student perfect and smoothen out the rough edge to make them perfect professionals.
  4. House Keeping: The basic of housekeeping is taught to the students with practical sessions. Training is also given to prepare guest rooms according to International standards; skill development in interior decoration, flower arrangements and cleaning exercises is the part of study.
  5. Front Office Lab: Front office management procedure such as reservations, registration, check-in and check-out procedures, bell desk procedures, bell desk services, telephone operations, cash handling, fax billing, role-plays, situation handling and case study etc., are taught to the students with practical sessions at the front office to make them familiarize with the situation.
  6. Bakery and Confectionary Lab: Basics of Bakery and Confectionary is taught along with blending methods of dough, pastries and custard. Students learn to make different types of bread, cakes, pastries, cookies, ice-cream, mousses, sugar and chocolate works.
  7. Computer Lab: The computer lab is equipped with latest technologies and the students are trained by adopting innovative teaching tools. Exposure is given to the students on various applications related to the industry using multiple systems of reputed brands.
  8. Seminar Hall: The institute has a well-equipped, air conditioned seminar hall.
  9. Library & Reading Room: A well stocked library and reading room where various vernacular and foreign language dailies, periodicals and journals are available. The library is fully air-conditioned to provide maximum comfort for its users.

In the Department of Tourism & Hotel Management, student council is functioning for the welfare of the students. Cultural Club Activities

Our department has running a cultural club to exhibit the talents of students of our department. Every year our students are participating in the Alutes Programme conducted by our university at University level and Mrs. T. Sribala from MBA I year participated in “Alutes Solo Classical Dance competition” in the year 2023 and won the first prize. Mr. Laxmanan from B.Sc II year performed his bharathanatyam in World tourism day function conducted at our department on 27.09.2023 and his performance was appreciated by the chief guests and all the participants. Also he participated in the Bharathanatyam.
