The Department of Bioinformatics was established in the year 2008 to facilitate teaching, learning and research in the multidisciplinary areas of Structural Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics, and to create an intellectual environment for interdisciplinary education and training. This Department has been nationally recognised by the DST, UGC, FIST-Level I, DBT – BIC, DBT-NNP, DST-PURSE and RUSA.

Alagappa University offers two-year M.Sc Biochemistry Programme, which was launched in the year 2025 under the Department of Bioinformatics, School of Biological Sciences. This interdisciplinary Programme integrates key aspects of Biology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry, providing a strong foundation for exploring the chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms. It forms the foundation for understanding diseases like cancer, diabetes, and genetic disorders are best explained through biochemical processes occurring at the cellular level. Studying biochemistry is important because it builds strong analytical and laboratory skills, connects biology with chemistry, and prepares students to contribute to research, healthcare, and innovation.

The scope of an M.Sc. Biochemistry degree is wide, offering career opportunities in research institutions, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical and diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, government research bodies, and academia, as well as pathways into higher studies like Ph.D. and specialized fields such as genomics and bioinformatics.

In pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries, they can contribute to drug development, quality assurance, and clinical trials, with leading companies like Biocon, Sun Pharma and all the medical hospitals and drug laboratories actively seeking skilled professionals. In the health sector, biochemists are highly sought after in diagnosis, hospital laboratories, and clinical research organizations, playing vital roles in disease management, Public Health initiatives and therapeutic innovation.
