The Department of Physical Education and Health Sciences was brought into existence in 1987 with M. Phil and Ph. D. programmes to cater to the requirements of aspirants of Physical Education. In order to undertake advanced research in the domain of Physical Education and publish seminal research findings in reputed journals, the department was created. Later, PG Diploma in Sports Management was offered in 1995. The department also has the distinction of offering an exclusive orientation programme in 2010 for ex-service men under the aegis of Human Resource Development Ministry. In order to create awareness among the students on performance of yoga, a Yoga Centre with the grant in aid of Rs. 50 Lakhs from the UGC was established in the year of 1993. In recognition of the potential of the Department of Physical Education and Health Sciences, the UGC sanctioned a grant in aid of Rs. 28 Lakhs to run Special Assistance Programme (SAP-DRS Level 1) in the thrust areas of Physiotherapy and Yoga.
