Department of Botany
Genesis

The Department of Botany, established in 2016, is one of the youngest departments of Alagappa University, offering postgraduate (PG) and Ph.D., programmes in Botany with the aim of producing scholarly botanists capable of addressing various challenges confronted both at the national and global levels. The department is equipped with a sophisticated characterization facility, which supports research activities in Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences.

The faculty members have received national and international awards, contributing to the department’s visibility. The research activities are mostly interdisciplinary. The thrust areas of research include Systematic Botany, Plant Conservation, Plant Production, Plant Physiology, Plant Tissue and Cell Culture, Applied Botany, Phytomedicines, Plant Pathology, Genomics, Recombinant DNA Technology. The research also focusses on assessing the impact of climate change on various flora and fauna.

In the past 7 years, the Department of Botany has published outstanding research articles in highly reputed scientific journals. Additionally, the department has produced 1 Ph.D., 81 M.Phil. graduates, and 122 M.Sc. graduates, showcasing its commitment to academic excellence. It regularly organizes seminars and conferences on topics of current interest in the area of Plant Biotechnology, Biodiversity and Mushroom Culture inviting national and international experts.

Vision
  1. To elevate the Department of Botany as a well-known centre of research in Plant Sciences and Plant Biotechnology initiating innovative research and making the next generation botanists to pursue their studies with academic rigour and productivity.
  2. To uphold the highest standards in publishing impactful research on Biodiversity and Climate Change so as to enhance the global visibility of the Department.
Mission

The Department of Botany is committed to:

  1. Empowering the youth with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in Plant Sciences, with the aim of establishing a Centre of Excellence in Plant Biotechnology.
  2. Contributing to knowledge to address a wide range of research-based challenges and problems confronted in the area of Biodiversity and Climate Changes.

Foraging shift of honeybees in urban ecosystems due to anthropogenic cues

"If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man"

Albert Einstein

Bees are the generalist pollinators for about 25,000 – 30,000 flowering species worldwide. They are highly responsible for agricultural productivity by pollinating more than 70% of important crops and ecosystem’s sustainability. In general, bees visit flowers to collect nectar & pollen and through this process the plants achieve pollination. In the recent past, we have witnessed foraging shift in bee population, which visited non-flower agents viz. disposed paper cups, sugarcane juice vendors and soft drink bars. This shift resulted in the increased mortality of bee population during foraging activity and caused changes to their pollination network. This could bring havoc in crop production and questioning the agricultural sustenance in near future. This study can bring policy recommendations and scientific ideology for maintaining sustained bee populations in the urban ecosystems. Our present work will give a clear understanding in mitigation of colony collapse disorder through anthropogenic activities and controlling the behavioral shift of bees which can help in maintaining the ecosystem sustainability and agricultural productivity.
