Department of Biotechnology
Genesis

The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002. The Department offers a two year M. Sc., Degree Programme in Biotechnology and a Doctoral Programme leading to Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the Academic year 2002 - 2003. With the full financial support of DBT, Govt. of India, a One Year Post M. Sc., Advanced Diploma Course in Molecular Diagnostics was offered during the period 2008-2013. DBT, Govt. of India has extended financial support for strengthening of laboratory equipment to be utilized for M. Sc., Biotechnology teaching in 2009 and also received grants for DBT Supported M.Sc., Biotechnology Programme in 2020 for five years duration (2020-25). The Department has been undertaking research projects of National and International importance in the field of Biotechnology and attracted funds from various funding agencies such as Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Human Resource Development (HRD) Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), University Grants Commission (UGC), Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB-CSRP) and Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) independently as well as in collaboration with many National Institutes/Universities. The Department is also carrying out collaborative research projects sponsored by the industries such as ITC Life Sciences & Technology Centre (ITC LSTC), Bengaluru, Evolva Biotech Private Limited, Chennai, E.I.D Parry Private Limited and Tablets India Limited (TIL), Chennai. The Department is maintaining DBT funded National Facility in the form of Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) (2006-2020) and this Centre has received Incentive Awards from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India for getting the first, third and third positions in the category of BIF (Universities) for publication of papers in the journals of high repute for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively. To add up to its credit, the Department has also signed MoUs’ with National and International Institutions such as National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Kolkata and Hirosaki University, Japan.

A state of the art Proteomics Facility has been established at the Department with 2D and MALDI (Nature India Spl. Issue Aug 2015) and published papers in the area of proteomics in prestigious Journals along with DST-FIST supported Animal House Facility and ITC LSTC sponsored Cell Culture Facility with advanced analytical instrumentations. The Department has published 447 research papers in SCI journals so far withtotal citations of 12904 and h-index of 63. The Department has been nationally recognized by various funding agencies through the schemes such as DST-FIST (Level I, Phase I 2009-11; Level I, Phase II 2016-21), UGC-SAP (DRS I 2011-2016, DRS-II 2017-2022), DST-PURSE (Phase I 2011-2015, Phase II 2016-2020). The Department has also filed 46 Indian Patents, out of which seventeen have been published and six have been granted. Many students of the Department have cleared competitive exams such as DBT-JRF, ICMR-JRF, CSIR-JRF-NET, GATE, ASRB-NET, ICAR-NET, SET and TOEFL and secured top ranks. Threefaculty members of the Department have earned their Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Biotechnology. The Faculty members havewon awards such as Tamil Nadu Scientist Award [Biological Sciences; 2012, 2020], Tamil Nadu Young Women Scientist Award [2010], Malaviya memorial Award (Senior Faculty, BRSI 2022, 2017), Shri P. K. Das Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award [2016], BRSI Woman Scientist Award [2014], Shri P. K. Das Memorial Best Faculty Award [Senior category; 2012 & 2013],Alagappa Excellence Award for Research [2016], UGC-Mid Career Award (2018) and VallalAlagappar Research Recognition Award [2020].

  1. To create state of the art facilities for imparting the much important hands-on training in Biotechnology through adequate laboratory courses and extensive project works
  2. To create highly skilled human resources with technological competence, ethics, morale and integrity through Post Graduate and Doctoral programmes in Biotechnology
  3. To undertake research projects of National and Global importance by employing cutting edge Biotechnology techniques and joining hands with Biotech Industries and premier Academic Institutions
  4. To bring out pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products with special emphasize on alternative to antibiotics, anti-aging, phage therapy, ex-situ and in-situ conservation of medicinally important plant resources and novel Biomolecules to combat infectious diseases and neurodegenerative/metabolic disorders through translational Biotechnology
  5. To empower researchers to create, protect and commercialize intellectual properties
